On February 16, 2012 the adjunct faculty at American University voted on whether the join the Service Employees International Union. SEIU is the fastest growing union in North America, and has been established for the past 90 years.
Ballots at American University were counted to determine whether adjunct faculty will be represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 500. Of the 1,672 eligible votes, 379 were cast in favor of union representation and 284 were cast in opposition. The university has decided to not file any legal challenges to the election’s results. According to American University’s Provost, the administration will begin the collective bargaining process and engaging in a constructive dialogue with the union regarding issues related to adjunct faculty employment.
